Life Cycle Of a Dental Handpiece
We own lots of goods in our life.
But do we know the life of these goods?
How does they come?How will they be used?And where will they go after get sick?
Now let’s try to learn the life cycle of a dental handpiece together.
Part 1 Basic knowledge of a dental handpiece
Dental Handpiece(also call dental drill):An instrument that is used to hold rotary instruments in the dental engine or condensing points in mechanical condensing units.
It is connected by an arm, cable, belt, or tube to the source of power (e.g., motor, air, water).
Normally dental handpieces are divided into 2 sorts:high speed handpieces(some people call fast handpiece or turbine)
and low speed handpieces(some people also call slow handpiece).
The main difference between them is the rotary.
Rotary of high speed handpiece is :30 W – 42 W r/m,normally is 38W.
Rotary of low speed handpiece is :2 W – 5 W r/m,normally is 3W.
High speed handpiece could divided into 2 holes/4 holes/6 holes/3 holes by tubes in the end of handpiece.
And it could divided into normal handpiece/LED light handpiece/Fiber optic handpiece by the Light resource.
Besides there has push button/chuck(screw) handpiece,divided by difference of back cover on handpiece head.
Low speed handpiece has three main types:green ring /blue ring /red ring handpiece.
Slow handpiece with green ring mean it has decrease speed,has blue ring means it has 1:1 speed,
and with red ring mean it has increase speed.
Also it has light and push button difference.
But different with high speed handpiece,it has inner water supply and outside water supply types.
For fast handpiece,water are both inside supply.
Part 2 Production of a dental handpiece
Handpiece are a combination of different parts,normally includes:
handle,water and air tubes,KV axis,bearing,bearing block,wheel,seal ring.rubber…
Brief Produce Process:produce/outsourcing spare parts—quality check— assembling —
quality check— package — final check — finished.
Part 3 Usage and maintenance of a dental handpiece
During the working of a handpiece, the compressed air flowing into the turbine must be oil-free,dust-free,dry and standard of medical use.
Since the air is the driving force of bearing,it go directly into handpiece and makes the bearing twirl .
So any water or dust go with air into the bearing will cause seriously damage to bearing.
What is more,the water and dust will increase friction of bearing, and has dirt on tubes if long time no clean.
Therefore, every dental handpiece should be worked with standard medical compressed air which is oilless,dustless and dry .
Besides, we have to clean and oil the circle bearing inside of the high -speed handpiece and the contra angle when we maintaining dental handpiece .
Only correct maintain can make the handpiece work as long as it’s life.
Daily Maintenance tips:
1.Use high quality standard oil to clean handpiece everyday,one at noon after work,one at night after work.
If continue use handpiece more than 30 minutes,should add oil and do clean of handpiece during treatment. (suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
2.Periodically check and clean the compressor and filter.
Add oil in the end of turbine air-in tube,until the turbine head has oil spray out.
（about 2 – 3 minutes）(suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
3.If no water comes out from turbine,not use steel wire to poke spray first.
Please use spring gun blowing in turbine from end of the water-out tube. (suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
4.And thorough cleaning and maintenance before sterilize.Not clean enough will damage the bearing.
Shell of handpiece use ultrasonic cleaning,bearing and cartridge use cleaning agent.(suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
5.For push button handpiece,need clean chuck every week.(suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
6.Normally working pressure is ：high spped 2.2-2.5HPA,low speed 2.5-3.0HPA.DO NOT overload use,too high pressure damage bur and bearing.(suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
7.No matter high speed or low speed handpiece,need adjust speed according to diameter of bur.Or will damage bearing.(suitable for all high-speed handpieces)
8.Oil must before sterilizing.
9.Must NOT use the handpiece without bur or the chuck ,or the device will be damaged.
10.Forbid using lubricant with chlorine,acid and hypochlorite solution to soak or scrub handpiece ,or will damage the o-ring.
11.Do not clash or hit the handpiece,also no drop ! Because the pit may cause the the stronger friction to the bearing and will make it’s use-life shorter .
12.Do not use not-required bur (The standard dimension of bur is 1.59-1.60mm)
Above is the normal problems and the maintaining method.Please take good care of your handpiece as this manual.
Part 4 Repair of a dental handpiece
Here we got some feedbacks about handpiece problems from our clients:
1.water supply problems: like water can not come out completely , or water spray nonuniform .
Those problem would be caused by pipe blocking(scale or water quality), you can use this needle to solve it , some caused by weak water air pressure of dental chairs , just set it back to 198KB.
2.Rotor’s water outlet blocking problems, in this case you can remove back cover,
get rotor out and use some brush to clean it or insert needle to outlet. Also could using 3-way syringe to clean.
3.Bur split out problems like: burs hard to take out and rotor vibrate during working,
you need select appropriate speed and good quality burs ,and make sure bur is in the right position.
4.Rotor stop working. Falling will make nose out of shape and wheel arrested work, just use some tool recover nose from normal.
And check bearing don’t have a lack of oil.if yes, just oiling. Once bearing got damage , you have to change a new one.
Low air pressure would lead handpiece work slowly, just adjust air pressure 2.0-2.5Kgf/cm2.
